Yudhisthir asked Lord Shri Krishna,” Dear Lord, Please tell us about Jyestha Krishna Ekadashi , its name and its significance.”
Lord Shri Krishna was pleased on this equation and said,” O King Yudhishthir , This Ekadashi is named Apara Ekadashi because its gives immense(Apar) wealth. Whoever does this Fast becomes famous in the world. Apara Ekadashi fast destroys the sins of Brahman killing, Ghost yoni, the sin of denigration, This fast is remover of big sins. Following kind of sins are absolved by observing this fast-Adultery, appearing as false witness, telling lies, weighing less, writing false scriptures, duping others, posing as false medic.
People telling lies in court ,treacherous behavior – If all these people ask for forgiveness sincerely and with clear heart and fast on Apara Ekadashi, their sins are removed as well. Warriors who run away from war , go to hell but if they observe Apara Ekadashi fast they go to heaven. Students who get education from their Gurus but denigrate about them afterwards, they go to hell as well. But they can also absolve their sins by observing Apara Ekadashi.
People who denigrate their parents , can also become eligible to attain Vaikuntha if they observe Apara Ekadshi.

The merits attained by Apara Ekadashi are equal to that of taking bath in all three Pushkars on Karthik Purnima. Or merits attained by offering Pindadana in holy river Ganges. The merits attained by observing Apara Ekadashi are equal to merits attained by dig following virtuous deeds-
- Taking Bath in Prayagraj in Capricorn ( on Makar Sankranti)
- Fasting on Shivaratri
- Taking darshan of Shri Kedarnath in Kumbha
- Merit attained by staying in Badrikashram
- Taking bath in Kurukshetra on Solar Eclipse

Merits attained by observing Apara Ekadashi are equal to all the above-mentioned virtuous acts.
Apara Ekadashi is akin to an Axe meant for cutting down the tree of Sins, like a fire to burn the wood of sins. This fast is like Sun to destroy the darkness of sin. It’s a lion to kill the deer of sins. This life is like a bubble of water, Therefore people should be afraid of sin and observe this fast with steadfast mind. Person who does Apara Ekadashi fast and worships God, gets rid of all his sins and goes to the loka of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Shri Kirshna further said,” O Son of Kunti, I will tell you’re a story mentioned in Puranas about this fast. Listen carefully”
Once upon a time there was a pious King Mahidwaj. His younger brother Vajradhwaj was very cruel , evil & unjust. This opportunist sinner Vajradhwaj murdered his elder brother Mahidhwaj one night because of extreme jealousy. He buried his body underneath a Peepal tree(A kind of Fig tree) in the forest. The King became ghost due to his untimely death and started dwelling on the same Peepal tree. He used to create a lot of nuisance from that Peepal tree. One day Rishi Dhaumya happened to passed from there. He saw the ghost creating nuisance there. He knew King’s past from his penance power .
Rishi brought him down from the tree and gave him knowledge about Paralok Vidya (Knowledge of higher realms). Kindhearted Rishi performed Apara Ekadashi fast for Mahidhwaj by himself and donated the merits to the ghost. King became free from Ghost form because of the effect of Apara Ekadashi. He thanked Rishi multiple times and took the divine form and went to heaven.
O King Yudhirsthir, I have told this story for the larger good of the people. This story gives pleasure to the saintly people . People get rid of their sins by reading or listening to this story. This fast should be carried out with many donations, good and kinds deeds, fasting, restriction of sensory pleasure and with complete devotion.
