Hanuman Chalisa is a Bhajan written by Goswami Tulasidasji in 15th century. It consists of 40 verses (Chaupais) singing praises of Lord Shri Ram’s most ardent devotee Shri Hanumanji. It is said that Shri Tulasidas was Sage Valmiki in his previous birth. He wrote Ramayan , the life story of Lord Shri Ram in Sanskrit. He came to know that Lord Hanumanji has also written his own version of Ramayan. Valmikiji visited him to see his Ramayana. However Valmikiji became very sad after reading Hanumanji’s Ramayan, which Hanumanji wrote on stones, using his nails.
When Lord Hanumanji asked him the reason behind his sadness, he told that the Ramayana written by Shri Hanumanji was far better than his version of Ramayan, So no one would read his Ramayan. Hanumanji disposed his Ramayan in sea and thus ended the predicament of Valmiki ji. Valmikiji was greatly moved by his gesture and said that he could not do justice with Shri Hanumnaji’s greatness in his Ramayana and he would have to incarnate again to write again to extol the virtues if Shri Hanumanji.
It is said that Valmikiji re-incarnated as Tulasidas and wrote a full chapter of Sundar Kand in Racharitmanas about heroic deeds of Hanumanji and wrote Hanuman Challisa , Bajarang Baan, Hanumanasthak. Hanuman Bhauk and many other verses extolling the great virtues of Hanumanji.

There is another story of when Tulasidas started writing Hanuman Chalisa. Moghul King Akbar ruled in Fatehpursikari those day. He heard a lot about the miracles of Tulasidas , intrigued he decided to call him in his capital Fatehpursikari . When he asked Tulasidasji to show some miracle, he refused, Akbar was enraged and put him into prison. It was then when Tulasidasji started writing Hanuman Chaleesa to propitiate Hanumanji. Soon a lot of monkies enetered the FatehpurSikari and started creating nuisance all over the city. People panicked. It went on for few days the someone suggested Akbar to free Tulasidasji Akbar freed him instantly and soon monkies disappeared from the city. There is a line in Hanuman Chalisa, ” Jo Yah Shat bar path kar joi, Chuutahi bandi ahasukh hoi” Meaning “Whoever recites this Hanuman Chalisa a hundred times he will get freed from prison”. This indicates his won ordeal of that era.
The place where this Hanuman Chalisa was written, is in Cannaught Place in Delhi now. There is huge Hanuman temple there now a days. It is a siddha peeth now.
Shri Hanunaji is epitome of Bhakti . Whenever there is a discussion on Saguna Bhakti (Devotion to Physical Manifestation of God) , Hanumanji is the top of the mind recall by most of us. His name is enough to generate the devotional love to God. So much so that his name is taken in same breath as his Lord Shri Ram.
“Siya var Ramchandra ki Jai, Pavansut Hanuman ki Jai”
(Victory to the chosen one/ groom of Sita,Shri Ramchandra, Victory to the son of wind God Shri Hanuman)
This chants automatically come to our lips whenever we recite glories of Shri Ram , read Ramcharitmanas or read Hanuman Chalisa. Bhakti would have been in much worse state , has Hanumanji not been there. the belief that Shri Hanuman ji is alive and chanting Shri Ramji’s somewhere, gives us immense faith and motivational power in our ancient vedic culture. Shri Hanumanji has upheld the Saguna Bhakti alive even today and will keep on till the time Lord Shri Ramji’s name is revered on this earth.
Hanumanji is integral to our Indian culture so much that you find a temple for him in every nook and corner of city and villages across the country. And not only in main perimeter of city or village, you will also find his temple in far of farms , remote areas and in jungles at times too. It is safe to say that his temple will be more than his beloved Lord Shri Ram as well. Such is the love of Shri Rama towards his devotees that he makes them more popular than himself.
If you take the name of Hanumanji you will be automatically reminded of Shri Ramji as well. To meet Shri Ramji you have to pass under the observation of Shri Hanumanji first. Why so many temples of Hanumanji? Because Hanumanji is immensely powerful and he has the biggest power of Universe , the Name of Shri Ram with him.
In India, we don’t only revere the power, we revere the power which is used for Dharma(righteousness) , the power used for the betterment of the moral values and justice. Shri Hanumanji stands for justice and righteousness and for good people, One cannot pray to him to get his malintent fulfilled. He will get the payback sooner than he will realize. Hanumanji does not support any bad deed.
Hanumanji is an eternal protector of good people, those who pray to him. It is said that reading Hanuman Chalisa protects one in forest , travelling at home , everywhere. The Chaupai says ” Van, Upavan, Mag, Giri, Grih mahi, Tumhare bal ham darapat nahi” means ” In the forest, garden, while travelling(road or any path or in vehicle ), on mountain and in house, we are not afraid of anything because we have trust in your force. You are our protector Hanumanji”. That is also one of the reasons, why we have Hanumanji present everywhere. In modern age people Keep Hanuman idols in their cars and other vehicles also. It is the power if belief that Hanumanji’s bhakti will keep them safe always.
Not only for protections , Hanumanji is ideal fro idealist as well. A perfect being as bhakt he is ever read in service of Lord Shri Ram. The biggest entanglement of Maya , The Kama(Lust) it self has got its nemesis in the form of Hanumanji. The lust got hold of many Devas and has not left even Tridevas but it was subdued and faced it worst defeat from Hanumanji.
Hanumanji is Bal-Brhamchari and a true celibate but he had to marry Sun God’s daughter Survachala in order to obtain the Brahm Vidya, where Sun God kept this binding condition on him to marry first then receive the vidya. Survachala was also a tapasivini like Hanumanji and they married but both remained celebrate forever. We have heard about Rishis who couldn’t keep their celibacy against celestial nymphs but Shri Hanumanji proved too powerful to the lust and remained firmly ingrained in Lord Shri Ramji’s Bhakti.
Hanumanji is pious , pure, powerful and symbolize everything good only. He is the manifestation of the belief in power of devotion. His name reverberates and revives the goodness in our hearts making us little more divine every time we try to imbibe some of his b=virtues in ourselves.
“Ram rasayan Tumhare pasa , sad raho Raghupati ke dasa.” meaning”The Ram Tatva (The elixir of Shri Ram’s name is with you Hanumanji, always remain the eternal servant of Shri Ramji” .
Shri Hanumanji is alwsy immersed in the devotion of Shri Ram and has reached the level, where there remains no difference between Shri Ram and Hanuman. Bhagwan(God) and Bhakt(Devotee) become one principle only.
